REF 2029 Assessment Panels: Applications now open

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is a vital exercise for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.

The recruitment for the REF 2029 Assessment Panels and Panel Secretariat is now open. Participating in a REF panel can benefit both you as an individual and the University, by offering the unique chance to shape the national research landscape, gain insights into research assessment, and influence how excellence is evaluated.

As a panel member, you can:

  • Influence the future of UK research assessment
  • Gain insights into research quality and impact evaluation
  • Promote transparency and fairness in the process

This is a valuable opportunity to showcase Loughborough University’s strengths nationally. We are committed to supporting you in this role and will provide:

  • Workload relief to ensure colleagues have the time to undertake REF panel duties effectively
  • Support and recognition, acknowledging the value of stepping into these influential roles, including rewards to reflect the contribution to both the University and the national research community.

Who should apply?

The REF panels seek a diverse and inclusive group of experts with experience in research quality assessment, research impact, and research environments. Applications are encouraged from researchers at all career stages, disciplines, and backgrounds, with a focus on ensuring underrepresented groups are included.

  • Deadline for sub-panel chair and deputy chair roles: Midday, Thursday 6 February 2025
  • Other panel roles’ deadline: Midday, Monday 28 April 2025

The REF team also invites experienced research professionals to apply for secondments to the Panel Secretariat, with both Panel Advisors and Panel Secretaries sought. Applications for these roles close at midday on Monday 13 January 2025.
