Loughborough University marks Holocaust Memorial Day 2025

There are three events at the University available to staff and students who wish to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (Monday 27 January).

This is a day recognised annually across the world to remember the six million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other people killed from 1933-1945 under the Nazi persecution and in genocides across the world since.

At 12pm on Monday 27 January, Dr Paul Maddrell will host a lecture on 'The Preventability of the Holocaust'. This lecture examines the major steps in the sequence of events which led to the Holocaust and shows that, in each and every case, they were preventable.

Amanda Harrington, Associate Lecturer from Loughborough Business School, will be hosting a workshop 'Making room for multiple voices in healing for the future' on this year’s theme ‘Learning from genocide: for a better future. The event will take place on Monday 27 January, 1pm-2pm in Brockington, B008. This workshop will start with acknowledgement of the build-up to the World War Two Holocaust and its devastating, ongoing impact. In 2025, Antisemitism is on the increase and Islamophobia also grows. Against the backdrop of the conflict in Gaza, we continue to see debate and denial regarding genocide. The main part of this workshop will follow a Listening Circle format, where all participants have the opportunity, if they wish, to share their thoughts and feelings. Whatever you feel you do or don’t know, come ready to consider sharing the impact on you of the World War Two Holocaust and current genocides.

There will be a vigil at the Hazlerigg Fountain at 4pm. The University Chaplain Rev’d Elizabeth York will lead a short service of reflection and remembrance, with readings, poems and silence.

In Loughborough Town, a memorial will also take place on the same day. On Monday 27 January, 12pm, at the Bandstand at Queen’s Park in Loughborough there will be a simple ceremony to commemorate the victims of genocide in every time and every place. Please note this event is not led by Loughborough University.

Please remember that additional support services are always available for those impacted:
