Most students with long-term immigration permission (this does not include visitors) should now have an eVisa record of their immigration permission, including those who were issued a biometric residence permit (BRP) due to expire 31 December 2024. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) provide a video on how to travel with an eVisa.
Before travel, it is important to ensure your eVisa details are correct and that the passport you will use is linked to your digital account.
- Check your immigration status is displaying correctly by using the view and prove your immigration status service.
- If your status appears incorrect, report an error with your eVisa.
- Use the update your UKVI account details service to check:
- the passport you will use for travel is linked to your account
- your personal details are correct.
Given concerns about how the transition to eVisa travel may work, the government has recently announced it will also allow travel to the UK on expired BRPs up to 31 March 2025. This assumes that your immigration permission is still in place at the time of travel. The Home Office has said it will keep this arrangement under review and advise:
- passengers whose immigration permission is still valid but whose BRP expires on or after 31 December should continue to carry their expired BRP with them when they travel in the early part of 2025;
- passengers may also wish to create a view and prove share code in advance of travel, which is valid for 90 days.
The Student Advice and Support Service provides more information on eVisas and can be contacted at advice@lboro.ac.uk.
While you hold a Student visa you do not require permission from the University to travel, there is no UK requirement for a letter of consent or ‘no objection letter’. If you wish to travel with confirmation of your student status, you can obtain a Certificate of Registration from Student Self-Service or if necessary, contact Student Records & Operations, London Student Services or the Doctoral College Office as appropriate. If you are travelling outside of vacation time please ensure you continue to satisfy any attendance requirements.
