On November 18, 2024, the Center for Sovereignty and Climate, in partnership with Loughborough University and with the support of the War College, the Defense College, and the ECEME Graduate Program in Military Science, will host a Master Class with Sherri Goodman, one of the world’s leading experts on environmental security and the Pentagon’s 1st Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security (1993-2001). Goodman is widely credited with educating a generation of U.S. military and government leaders on the intersection of climate change and national security, introducing the term “threat multiplier” and shaping the national discourse on the topic.

The event, titled “The Nexus of Climate Change and National Security,” will explore how the U.S. Department of Defense, under Goodman’s leadership, has begun to integrate the environment and climate change into defense planning. From natural disasters to resource scarcity, climate change is now one of the greatest threats to human and global security, exacerbating conflicts, increasing instability in many regions, and putting people’s lives and the very existence of countries at risk.

Additionally, Goodman will share insights from his recently released book, “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security,” which explores how the U.S. military has become a leader in climate change adaptation and mitigation. In Brazil, where the debate between climate and security is still in its early stages, this event seeks to foster reflections on how the country can address these challenges in the near future.

The free event will be held virtually, in English, with simultaneous translation into Portuguese on Zoom. All registrants will have the opportunity to purchase Goodman’s book with a 20% discount on the Island Press website.
