I chose to study Robotics, Mechatronics and Control Engineering because of the wide range of topics covered within the degree. I not only learnt about building robots but also about the subject areas: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering. This diverse engineering knowledge makes the degree well-rounded and has expanded the career opportunities open to me assisting with my employment options after University.
A highlight of my course was the Robotic Olympiad, where we were split into groups and assigned a competition category. At the end of the year, we showcased our robots in front of an audience, competing against other groups. The "robo-wars" experience, along with other collaborative projects fostered a strong sense of community within our course.
During my time at Loughborough, I applied theoretical concepts in the lab, from LED circuits to designing and building a robot for my Final Year Project. For this project, I created a Robotic STEM Challenge to inspire children to pursue STEM careers. The success of the project led to additional funding and the opportunity to expand it further. I’m now a qualified STEM Ambassador and I hope to use this experience towards obtaining Chartership in the future.
Loughborough has a strong sense of community and even if you're not involved in sports when you arrive, it's likely that you will be by the time you graduate. The motivating atmosphere at the University has naturally made me more active and productive just by being part of it.
During my time at Loughborough, I was committed to maintaining a positive and healthy outlook, which led me to join the ‘Train and Gain’ all girls gym society, which was one of my favourite aspects of University life. It’s where I met most of my friends and the relaxed atmosphere allowed me to train at my own pace while also participating in social events.
Loughborough University has provided excellent assistance throughout my journey into the Army through the University Officers' Training Corps (UOTC) by providing transportation to a nearby squadron meeting each week, which has helped to support my on going training. In addition, my degree has played a key role in helping me work towards my Chartership with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps. It has also provided me with a valuable qualification to fall back on should I ever choose to return to civilian life.
I am proud to have secured a place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in my graduation year, as it provided an important career for me, once I completed my degree.
Throughout my degree, I never felt that I was missing out on any social opportunities at Loughborough. Even with the demands of the course, I was able to stay socially active by attending different events and joining societies.
