Project details
Currently, wound management burdens the NHS with more than £5 billion annually, with chronic wounds accounting for £3.2 billion of the bill. Worldwide, wound management costs the global healthcare sector over $20 billion, while the number of people suffering from chronic wounds due to diabetes, pressure ulcers etc. has steadily increased over recent decades and is expected to rise further due to aging populations and increasing chronic morbidities that require long term care.
Nationally, and globally, governmental healthcare plans place an increasing focus on prevention in an effort to reduce costs, and as such the requirement for technologies that enable effective diagnosis, prevention and treatment of wound complications is expanding.
Current research on the topic has focused on the incorporation or encapsulation of antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics, nanoparticles, and natural biological materials such as honey and essential oils in wound dressings fabricated with novel biocompatible materials.
An ideal biomaterial for wound dressing should be biodegradable and biocompatible and should provide enhanced gas permeability, moisture control, and mechanical stability, while removing exudates. In drug-eluting wound dressings, where delivering a certain amount of the drug over time is intended, the drug release rate must be controlled to prevent under- and over-dose. Beyond the drug concentration and the encapsulation techniques, the biomaterial composition has a tremendous influence on the drug release rate.
Despite all the efforts, controlling the release of drugs at a determined rate and within a particular duration remains a challenge, and most drug-eluting systems release drugs irrespective of time or patient needs. Hence, stimuli responsive wound dressings have currently emerged as a promising platform to deliver antimicrobial agents in a controlled manner, where drug release is triggered either by internal stimuli found in the body such as pH (as chronic wounds have higher pH compared to healthy skin) and temperature or external stimuli such as magnetic field, electric field, and ultrasound.
The aim of this project is to develop multifunctional stimuli responsive conductive bio polymer hydrogels that could achieve antimicrobial agent release in a controlled way. The project involved the synthesis of multifunctional stimuli responsive hydrogels, property characterisation, drug encapsulation and release studies, using a range of polymerisation methods, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmittion electrone microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) etc.
You will be working in state-of-the-art facilities, in collaboration with an industrial partner manufacturer of wound dressings and specialists in wound treatment from NHS hospitals on external advisor roles and members of the Doctoral Training Centre in Regenerative medicine at Loughborough. Fees for the 2025-26 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2025.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
