Project details

Hydrogen technologies and storage play a central part in governmental strategies around the world towards transitioning to clean energy and net zero. Some key initiatives include:

  • The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrogen Program that has launched the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, which aims to scale up hydrogen production to 10 million metric tons per year by 2030, 20 million by 2040, and 50 million by 2050.
  • The European Green Deal includes a comprehensive hydrogen strategy aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
  • Japan’s Basic Hydrogen Strategy aims to establish a hydrogen-based society by 2050. The government is investing in research and development for advanced hydrogentechnologies and supporting the deployment of hydrogen infrastructure.
  • Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy focuses on becoming a major global player in hydrogen production and export.

Hydrogen storage is critical in the development of a hydrogen economy, enabling the use of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier. H2 storage in high pressure gas cylinders entails significant safety risks and cost concerns as Hydrogen gas storage requires very high pressures (up to 700 bar or more). High-pressure hydrogen can cause embrittlement of metals, leading to cracks and potential failures in the storage cylinders that can lead to explosive releases of hydrogen. Additionally, compressing hydrogen to high pressures requires a significant amount of energy, which reduces the overall energy efficiency of the storage system.

Solid-state hydrogen storage involves storing hydrogen within or on the surface of solid materials through physical adsorption, chemical adsorption, or chemical reactions, and can offer a safe way to store H2 at low pressures. Hydrogen is then desorbed on demand by heating or lowering the pressure of the system. This method offers several advantages, including primarily safety, high storage density, and the potential for long-term stable storage.

Current research has been focused on mainly two classes of materials, Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon based materials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, while a third class of materials is currently emerging, conductive polymer based materials. Each class of materials offers some advantages but also face limitations that need to be overcome to enable safe and efficient solid state H2 storage solutions. For example, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer high hydrogen storage capacity but require cryogenic temperatures to achieve optimal hydrogen storage, which increase the energy costs. Additionally, their synthesis requires complex and expensive synthesis methods, and scaling up production while maintaining quality is a significant challenge.

Carbon based nano-materials need to overcome challenges such as limited storage, and scalability issues before they become viable for practical hydrogen storage applications. Conductive polymer composite aerogels, such as those based on polyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy), have high surface areas and porosity, and inherent conductivity which could enhance their hydrogen adsorption capacity. They are extremely lightweight, making them suitable for applications where weight is a critical factor such as transportation applications. Moreover, they can be functionalised by the addition of chemical groups that facilitate and enhance sorption and desorption of hydrogen. Conductive polymer aerogels can be processed into various forms, including films and composites, offering flexibility in design and application. Also, their synthesis can be relatively inexpensive, especially when using scalable methods and abundant raw materials.

The aim of this project is to develop conductive polymers hybrid composite aerogels that could overcome the current barriers and enable the development of viable H2 storage solutions towards a net zero economy. The project involves the synthesis of conductive polymer composite aerogels, their chemical functionalisation to enhance H2 binding and sorption capacity, metal species electrodeposition and characterisation of hydrogen sorption capacity, efficiency and performance, using methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Cyclic Voltametry and gas adsorption analysers.

You will work with a team of post-doctoral and PhD researchers in state of the art laboratories with one of the leading teams in this research area, members of the Centre of Circular Chemical Economy at Loughborough University.
