Project details
The field of formal language and automata theory focuses on the study of abstract machines, particularly investigating the problems these devices can solve and the resources they require. These formalisms are fundamental to theoretical computer science, as their utility spans areas such as, compiler construction, text manipulation, and formal verification. Their significance lies in the fact that, despite having finite representations, these devices are capable of representing (potentially) infinite sets. This theoretical and practical importance drives research into optimized implementations. In this context, it is crucial to keep their representations — algorithms and resource used — as concise and limited as possible, depending on the specific characteristics of the devices under consideration.
This project will cover the study of these models and their computations, as well as the investigation of the complexity of their algorithms, using techniques and tools from the field of formal language theory. The goal is to advance knowledge in this area of theoretical computer science, improve our understanding of different models of computation operating under resource constraints, and develop new theories and techniques to study these devices.
The project will primarily involve theoretical aspects of computer science, including the development of new definitions, theorems, and proofs, with the possibility of incorporating some practical programming components. The specific problems and techniques addressed can be tailored to align with the candidate's strengths and interests.
A successful candidate should be highly self-motivated with a passion for problem solving and abstract thinking. They should be able to work independently, although there are opportunities for collaboration and networking, both locally and internationally. Strong communication skills are desirable, but plenty of opportunities to develop these throughout the project are in place. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
The candidate will be part of the theoretical computer science research theme and will work closely with the primary supervisor, and will be supported through regular supervision meetings (typically weekly, at a minimum once per month) and trained on technical skills such as drafting publications and presenting at international conferences. They will likely share an office with other PhD students and postdocs, working in both related and unrelated areas. There will be opportunities to travel nationally and internationally.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.
Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:
- School of Business and Economics: not considered
- All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.
Universities given special consideration

Fees for the 2025-26 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2025.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
