The Informatics and Disaster Risk Management MSc enables you to develop a proficiency in the application of data processing and modelling techniques to the management of natural hazards.

Compulsory modules

This module aims to introduce key concepts in programming using suitable programming languages, such as Python and/or R, focusing on data description, summary and visualisation.

The aims of this module are for the student to become familiar with and comprehend the wide range of research methods and skills needed to investigate, understand, communicate and execute a research project.

The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of statistical and numerical methods, typically applied in civil engineering disciplines. It is designed to provide a conceptual and practical understanding of the mathematics and statistics that students will encounter in subsequent modules related to modelling and data analytics.

The aims of the module are to:

  • Introduce the theory and practice of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing techniques.
  • Equip students with the key concepts and skills required to perform GIS workflows from data collection, representation, manipulation, analysis and visualization.

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce general built environment professionals to sustainable Disaster Risk Management (DRM) activities (structural and non-structural) worldwide and
  • explore the links between engineering and planning interventions and subsequent increases or decreases in disaster risk (within the context of the challenges posed by climate change).

The aim of this module is to develop an advanced understanding of the drivers of flooding, what flood risk is and how it might change in the future, and the tools and strategies available to manage flood risk.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their programme of study.

How you'll be assessed

You will be required to undertake assignments. There are two or three major assessments to complete for each module, parts of which may be practical-based and/or groupwork-based. The weighting of marks differs for each assessment. Additionally, you will undertake a dissertation and a viva voce.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • A range of technical skills to understand disaster risk including machine learning, data analytics and artificial intelligence techniques
  • Effective collaboration across various sub-disciplines within the built environment to understand strategies in managing disaster risk, informatics and societal challenges
  • Exploring international networking opportunities to gain insights into disaster risk management practices in diverse contexts

Through interaction with the Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) and International Centre for Informatics and Disaster Resilience (ICIDR) research centres, including a new Flood Research Centre, you will develop the capabilities in addressing global challenges.

Qiuhua is an elected fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and holds a UNESCO Chair. His world-leading research in computational hydraulics and disaster risk reduction was recognised by winning the prestigious 11th Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water in 2024.

Chris works to understand how flow processes behave. This work has involved experiments and simulations as well as the development of novel data processing methods. Risk-related research has focused on the dynamics of snow avalanches and techniques for risk mapping.
