What are the International Exchange programmes?
Find out more about our International Exchange programmes
We encourage our students to undertake a study exchange at one of our international partner institutions, not only so that they can benefit from a high quality international educational experience, but also so that they have the opportunity to live in a country with a different cultural perspective.
We have a selection of University-wide and School-only international exchange partners, although places can be competitive due to restrictions on numbers.
School-only international exchange partners
A number of Schools have their own international exchange partners, for which the agreements are subject-specific.
You can use the search engine on the 'Find a Study Exchange' link below to explore the opportunities available to you.
For further guidance on the international agreements specific to your School, please contact the Exchange Co-ordinator for your School/Department.
When can I go on a study exchange?
Most exchanges take place during Part I (placement year) of undergraduate programmes and last for a single semester or a full year. Depending on your programme regulations, exchange opportunities may also be offered at different times. Your School can provide more details.
How do I apply for an international School-only study exchange?
The deadline for students wishing to apply for a School-only study exchange in the academic year 2024/25 has now passed. For details about how to apply for an international School-only study exchange in the academic year 2025/26, please contact the Exchange Co-ordinator for your School/Department.
Please note that there is a long lead-time for an international study exchange, therefore students wishing to undertake a study exchange in the academic year 2025/26 should submit an expression of interest to the respective Exchange Co-ordinator by the end of the Autumn Term 2024/25.

University-wide International Exchanges
Loughborough University has a limited number of study exchange places with a selection of international institutions in Australia, Austria, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the USA. These are available to all undergraduate students across the University but you must research the courses offered by our partners and check whether they align with your Loughborough degree programme.
If you are thinking of undertaking a University-wide exchange, please contact your School/Departmental Exchange Co-ordinator.
Competition for places is high and in order to adhere to our partner's requirements, Loughborough University will typically not shortlist students who have achieved less than 60% in Part A.
Please note that there is no guarantee that current agreements will still be in existence by the time that prospective students are ready to undertake their exchanges. It is, therefore, extremely important that you discuss your options with your School.

Before completing the application form, please ensure that you have done sufficient research into your chosen partner institutions and have checked that they offer suitable modules that align with your Loughborough degree programme. It is essential that you have a discussion with your School Exchange Co-ordinator/Administrator to seek their approval of your choices.
You will be asked the following questions as part of your application:
(250 words max for each answer)
1. Explain why you should be selected to undertake an international study exchange.
2. What research have you undertaken to prepare yourself for living and studying in a different country?
3. What challenges do you think studying abroad will bring and how will you overcome these?
4. Describe what you feel that you will gain from the exchange and how the experience will benefit both your current studies and future career aspirations.
5. Please provide any further information in support of your application.
Please be aware that you will not be able to save and return to your application form once you have started, so you may want to draft your answers separately.
You will also be asked to submit a copy of your academic transcript from your previous year of study. Any candidates who have not maintained a 2.1 grade in their previous year of study will most likely not be shortlisted.
Applications will close on Monday 13 January 2025. Late applications will not be considered unless there are extenuating circumstances.
A Selection Committee will consider all applications in late January. Candidates will be notified in February as to whether they have been successful or not. Successful candidates will be provided with advice on how to apply to the partner institution. Please be aware that the selection by Loughborough University does not guarantee that you will be accepted. Final approval is at the discretion of the partner institution.
