Tell us a little bit about yourself (hobbies, interests and background):

I am from Chesterfield (a small, unremarkable town!) and I have always loved sport, specifically football since seeing Luka Modric play for Spurs. I love all forms of football – whether it be playing, watching, or analysing it – whatever it is I live and breathe it when it comes to football. I also enjoy running and keeping myself fit and enjoy watching the F1!

How did you first get involved in volunteering within sport at Loughborough?

I first started volunteering after applying to shadow football coaches at an external company but then at the start of my second year, I became a football activator for the My Lifestyle programme and then helped out at some of the athletics competitions that take place on campus. This then lead to me applying to coordinate the Social Sport Football Leagues

During your years at Loughborough what have you got involved in through volunteering within sport?

Since coming to Loughborough, I have volunteered at Loughborough athletics events, been part of the My Lifestyle Programme as a Football Activator and coached Telford Halls’ IMS Football Team. During my second year, I was a part of the Social Sport Exec Team as one of the Football League Coordinators, organising and running the 12 football leagues on campus.

I volunteered at the Women’s Euros and 2024 Champions League Final as a part of the Spectator Services Team at Bramall Lane and became a Team Leader for the Youth Sport Trust (opportunities found on the CVA Portal!).

I found my placement through the CVA as I took up the role of Men’s Football Operations Coordinator in the Loughborough Sport Football Programme which was a brilliant experience. Whilst on placement I volunteered as the Sport Senate Vice Chair working with the Sport Executive Officer and the Chairs of the Exec teams.

I also volunteered for the FA as a part of the FA National Youth Council’s Community Engagement Team as Lead for the East region ensuring County FA’s in the East use youth voice in their work. I am also a part of the Youth Sport Trust’s Youth Board and represent the charity at events.

I have just taken the position of Intra-Mural Sport (IMS) Chair for my final year, leading a team of volunteers who deliver the IMS Programme.

What has your experience volunteering been like whilst at Loughborough?

My experience has been fantastic and it has been so incredible to be involved in so many different things. I have really enjoyed meeting so many different people who are all so passionate about getting involved in sport and developing themselves both personally and professionally.

I have mainly been involved in volunteering opportunities in football but there are a huge amount of opportunities given to you at Loughborough which is fabulous.

There has been so much support available through my journey volunteering at Loughborough and there are so many individuals to thank.

How has being involved with Loughborough Sport helped you develop and progress (personally and professionally)?

Being involved with Loughborough Sport has helped me develop quite a thick skin to criticism and things that can go wrong in sport and life . I feel much more able to ‘take things on the chin’, especially after running the Social Sport Football Leagues where it can be hard to please over 600 people every week.

Professionally, being exposed to training sessions with experts in leadership and being surrounded by so many people who are experts in sport volunteering has given me vital knowledge to better understand the sport industry and helped me gain many important contacts and network with others.

Being able to be exposed to taking accountability and responsibility for delivering and organising sport in a safe environment where things can go wrong is a great way to learn. Volunteering provides you with that chance.

What’s the best advice you could give to a Loughborough student looking to get involved in volunteering & gain the most out of their university experiences?

I would say to put yourself out there as much as you can by contacting people who can help you in the CVA or those you know who lead sport or something you want to get involved in across campus. This is difficult to begin with but once you do it you will reap the rewards and the opportunities will come.

You need to be brave to take the opportunities. If something pops up that sounds like something you would enjoy but you perhaps feel nervous about starting or you are not sure how good you will be, you should definitely take up the opportunity! That nervous feeling is what will drive you to succeed.

Finally, what do you enjoy most about volunteering?

Volunteering is just amazing! I really enjoy meeting so many different people. Talking to those that also lead sport as well as those who take part in what we organise is really rewarding and has allowed me to make some pretty cracking friends! You get the opportunity to make a difference and facilitate opportunities for others which is a great thing to do!
