Faye Harper

Performance Nutrition Intern

Faye has interned with the performance nutrition team since last summer, working closely with the Men’s and Women’s Lightning Rugby teams - including planning and contributing to refuel and recovery workshops, and creating infographics for the teams and within Powerbase gym.

Tell us a bit about yourself (what you do now, current job, career pathway, interests, background etc.)

I studied Human Biology at Loughborough University and also completed a placement year at England Cricket Board as a medical intern. My hobbies and interests include playing squash, going to the gym, cooking new recipes, trying new activities and spending time with friends and family.

How did you first get involved in volunteering within sport at Loughborough?

I contacted Andy Shepherd (Performance Nutrition Lead) at the start of my final year during my Human Biology Undergraduate degree to ask for a chat about his career as a performance nutritionist and he explained the potential CVA opportunities involved within Loughborough Sport. I applied for the summer nutrition work experience a few months after.

During your time at Loughborough, what volunteering roles did you get involved with?

I have gained volunteering experience during summer 2023 working with the Performance Nutrition Team. I helped the interns and placements at the time who worked with Men’s and Lightning Rugby, which included planning and contributing to refuel and recovery workshops and creating infographics for the teams and within Powerbase gym. Since then, I have continued my volunteering as a Performance Nutrition Intern as I commenced my MSc degree. I currently work with Women’s Basketball, create and deliver AU workshops weekly, and work alongside the university catering department including development and performance chefs.

What has your experience volunteering been like whilst at Loughborough?

Having the opportunity to gain the work experience prior to the internship, it allowed me to get a feel for what the internship involved and the nature of the work as a Performance Nutritionist. During my internship, there has been the amazing opportunity for regular CPD sessions to enhance my progression working in an interdisciplinary team and discuss topics with peers to develop professional skills that I can practice throughout my time as an intern and continue to develop in my career.

How has being involved with Loughborough Sport helped you develop and progress (personally and professionally)?

My current desire is to continue in the area of performance nutrition and the CVA has allowed me to gain invaluable experience within the field whilst studying at Loughborough University that I maybe wouldn’t learn about in the courses themselves. Not only have I developed applied nutrition skills but also professional and interpersonal skills whilst volunteering through the CVA.

What’s the best advice you could give to a Loughborough student looking to get involved in volunteering & gain the most out of their university experiences?

To try new things, if you are given the opportunity to experience something you might enjoy, then take it!
