Dr Gabrielle Hale is a Lecturer in Psychology within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. She joined Loughborough University in February 2025, following her position as a Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at the University of South Wales from 2017 to 2025.

Gabrielle earned her BSc in Psychology (2016) and MSc in Clinical and Abnormal Psychology (2017) from the University of South Wales. Her MSc dissertation focused on the psychosocial impact of women’s reproductive health problems, which led to the development of the PERIOD-QOL, a 10-item scale measuring the effect of menstruation and menstrual problems on women’s quality of life.

Gabrielle completed her PhD at the University of South Wales (2017-2024). Her research investigated the role of community-based programmes, delivered by the charitable foundations of UK professional football clubs, in promoting young people’s mental health.

Gabrielle’s research interests focus on two main areas. The first explores the impact of physical activity on mental health and well-being. Her work in this area has examined community-based interventions designed to increase physical activity and improve mental health, including football programmes run by the charitable foundations of UK professional football clubs and the MAN v FAT Football weight loss programme.

Her second research interest focuses on the psychosocial impact of women’s reproductive health, including menstruation, menstrual problems, and menopause. Gabrielle contributed to the development and validation of the PERIOD-QOL, a 10-item scale measuring the effect of menstruation and menstrual issues on women’s quality of life. Current projects in this area include: 1) developing and exploring the feasibility of online app PERIOD-PAL, 2) investigating menstruation experiences among staff and students in higher education, and 3) examining the impact of menstruation on sport and exercise performance.

Gabrielle has collaborated with the English Football League (EFL) Trust and mental health charity Mind to explore the role of professional football clubs in promoting mental health. This research focused on community-based programmes aimed at improving the mental health and well-being of adults, children, and young people. As part of this work, Gabrielle has partnered with several charitable foundations linked to UK professional football clubs in the EFL.

Gabrielle is currently working with MAN v FAT Football, alongside colleagues from the University of South Wales and the University of Liverpool, to examine the impact of the weight loss programme on men’s mental health and social well-being.

She is also a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (FMBPsS) and contributes as a reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Psychology.
