Three new Vice Chancellor Independent Research Fellows in Science

the new VC fellows lined up

Three School of Science staff have been named in the new cohort of Vice Chancellor Independent Research Fellows, who have started their two-year programmes of research.

The School fellow are:

  • Joanne Eaves, in the Department of Mathematics Education, who works on mathematical cognition and is focusing on bridging the gap from primary and secondary school mathematics.
  • Jan Cammann, also in the field of mathematics, who researches biofilms in a changing environment.
  • Vittorio Cecconi, physicist, is exploring terahertz hyperspectral imaging and its applications.

The scheme aims to support outstanding early career researchers who have recently completed their doctoral studies, by providing funding to progress their own research agenda and develop their skills as independent researchers. In an extremely competitive application process, over a hundred applicants across all subject areas were considered, and eight fellows were recruited.

Each Fellow will be supported by a mentor within their chosen School and offered bespoke career advice, a dedicated training programme and one-to-one support to develop strong applications for prestigious externally funded fellowships.

Applications are now open for the next corhort. Deadline for applying is 2 December.
