NHS England Patient Safety Syllabus (Level 3 & 4) Training

In 2021, NHSE released the updated Patient Safety Syllabus to support the education of NHS staff in the methods and approaches to improve staff and patient safety.
Initially to support the Patient Safety Strategy the programme was funded by NHSE England for Patient Safety Specialists (PSS) in their Trusts. In 2025, this programme will move to a locally funded model.
This comprehensive blended learning programme covers all the content outlined in Levels 3 & 4 of the Patient Safety Syllabus in five courses listed below:
- Unpacking the systems issues
- Managing patient safety risks
- Understanding the cultural, legal and regulatory factors
- Involving those affected
- Designing solutions
Each course (A-E) will contain a number of online, on-demand modules that include some online interactive learning activities. At the end of the online courses, each learner will be required to attend an in-person event held at various locations across England. Completion of the programme will include some self-directed learning and a case study submission for assessment.
Learner commitment
Prior to registration each learner will be expected to have completed either:
- The Patient Safety Level 1 & 2 programmes provided by NHS Learning through the e-learning for healthcare (e-lfh) hub (NHSE)
- And/or the equivalent Loughborough University Human Factors Ergonomics Level 1 e-learning (a link will be provided for all).
The overall programme (A-E) is CPD accredited for 125 hours of learning time to complete all five courses, plus the in-person events and the assessment delivery time. The full programme is expected to take between 8 and 12 months.
