David comes from a background intertwined with theatre, narratology, and cinema. He is deeply interested in designing stories and fictional experiences that encourage a more participatory role for the audience. During his undergraduate studies, he focused primarily on the role of a dramaturge, exploring how to create dramatic experiences in innovative ways. Later, in his MA program, he concentrated on understanding how various media platforms can enhance audience participation, including applied theatre, video games, radio performances, and interactive galleries.
After being awarded a studentship from Loughborough Doctoral College, David pursued a doctorate in video game narrative design, aiming to bridge the gap between academia and the video game industry.
David's doctoral research focuses on the concept of Holarchic Storytelling, which refers to transmedial experiences where each individual piece of media contributes to a larger narrative while also creating its own distinct fictional experience. He is currently investigating how narrative designers in video games use Holarchic Storytelling, as well as the limitations and potential of this storytelling approach.
