Dr Alberto Doretto

IAS Open Programme
University of Eastern Piedmont
Alberto Doretto is a researcher at University of Eastern Piedmont (Vercelli, Italy) focussing on river ecology. Alberto Doretto’s academic education started at University of Turin: graduating in 2011 and 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Biology, respectively.
During 2015-2019 Alberto Doretto undertook a PhD in the Biological Sciences and Applied Biotechnologies program at the University of Turin. His PhD investigated the effects of hydro-morphological alterations, especially siltation (i.e. excessive fine sedimentation) and flow intermittency, on the taxonomic and functional diversity of macroinvertebrate communities in rivers. His research employs a multidisciplinary approach, which simultaneously considers different components of lotic ecosystem (i.e. macroinvertebrate communities, organic matter breakdown, sediment transport, riverine habitat characterization). Results of his research are published in scientific journals in the following subject areas: taxonomic and functional diversity, ecosystem functionality and river biomonitoring.
Since 2021, Alberto Doretto has been working as researcher at University of Eastern Piedmont (Vercelli, Italy), where he delivers the Ecology module as well as the Environmental Impact Assessment module.
Since 2023, Alberto Doretto has been the Principal Investigator leading the project: “An interdisciplinary approach to study sediment Flushing operations from alpine reservoirs: Ecological, hydro-Morphological and Management Aspects (FluEMMA)”, funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and Education.
During their IAS Fellowship, Dr Doretto is collaborating with Dr Kate Mathers & Professor Paul Wood from the Department of Geography and Environment.
