Loughborough Lightning lift the Women’s Premier League (WPL) trophy.

Lightning step up preparations ahead of season opener

Loughborough Lightning’s Wheelchair Basketball side’s quest for a fourth straight title will begin on Saturday 18 January with a trip to Worcester Wolves (tip-off, 5 pm).

George Bates’ new-look team will look to continue their dominance of the sport, having won all three Women’s Premier League (WPL) championships since the league’s inception in 2021/22.

Lightning’s squad for the new campaign features a blend of youth and experience and will once again be spearheaded by Head Coach Bates.

“The new season is potentially a different one for us,” Bates told Loughborough Sport.

“There’s been a lot of change in the squad, and we have a talented young group of players. We’ll be looking to build each game and hopefully secure a positive position towards the end of the season.”

Lightning’s first home game on campus will be against the Mohawks on 21 February (6:30 pm).
