Joe, Oscar and Hiro at the Red Dot Design Awards

Oscar Oweson’s design work has been recognised with a Red Dot Award in the Design Concept category, being named the ‘best of the best’ in sustainability.

Four cameras in different colours

FOTOFOTO founders Joe Krumholz and Hiro Shinn approached Oscar shortly after he graduated with a degree in Product Design and Technology in 2022. They asked him to join their mission to shake up the disposable camera market.

As the sole designer on the project, Oscar joined Joe and Hiro in their venture, creating the FOTOFOTO FF-1 camera.

Disposable cameras are collected from film developers to be upcycled – an idea pitched by Oscar.

From there, the graduate designed a new shell for the cameras as well as an additional circuit board to upgrade the features of the camera. Usually, a disposable camera’s shell is broken once the film gets developed. Oscar’s new zero-waste design ensures that the camera can be refurbished and recycled ready for a new adventure.

Popular on holidays and other trips, the disposable camera no longer needs to be wasteful. The FF-1 cameras are returned to the company after use for photo development and the cameras are refurbished again.

This circular model was what won the team recognition at the Red Dot Awards.

Oscar said:

Being awarded the Red Dot Award was a somewhat strange experience, but nonetheless validating, as it is a recognition of all the work we had put into our product and the belief we have in it."

The company is based in New York. Inspired by Art Deco style, the refurbished cameras reminisce on the past of the city, but with a modern twist.

The Red Dot Awards are renowned in the design industry. The awards are aimed at those who would like to distinguish their business activities through design. Excellent design is selected by expert juries in the areas of product design, communication design, and design concepts.

Congratulations to Oscar and FOTOFOTO.
