The sessions are set to inspire students in small groups, giving them the chance to engage, ask questions and learn from alumni experts.
Helen Bierton is Banking Director at Lloyds Bank. She studied Banking and Finance at Loughborough.
During her session, Helen talked about how to align personal values with career. She also discussed innovation, digital transformation and the role of technology in banking.
She has spent her career in banking since her graduation in the late 90s and she also competed as an Olympic athlete for the GB Archery team at the 2004 Games.
Following the session, Helen said:
“It was such a privilege to be invited back to Loughborough and to have the chance to meet students with aspirations to help drive businesses in the UK. We discussed many topics from financial services, UK growth, governance, and Women in Business through to technology and AI.
“What an inspirational group of students, all with fascinating thoughts and insights on the world of work. Thank you Loughborough, and best of luck to all the students.”
During her career, Helen has steered the launch of the first ever digital mortgage application, been involved in the launch of the first high interest credit current account, and the first cashback current account for medium-sized enterprises.
Speaking after the event, one student, Sofia, said:
“A key takeaway was Helen’s commitment to empowering women in finance, offering guidance on securing a seat at the table and demonstrating value. She also shared how her time at Loughborough equipped her with the skills and discipline needed for success. Her career journey was truly inspiring, reinforcing the belief that we can shape the future of finance.”
Another, Aminata, added:
“I loved how Helen was so big on accommodating those who she works with. It really did show how she got into the role as a leader.”
Helen’s leadership skills served as inspiration to a group of students on a range of courses at Loughborough. They were able to chat and network over lunch whilst gaining an understanding of a career in banking.
Helen recently received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Loughborough Business School, recognising her dedication to banking, passion for helping women into business, and Olympic achievement.
Lunch with a Leader is a new series that invites students from across the Student Success Academy to sit down with some of Loughborough alumni to hear about their journey to success and an opportunity to network. This is the first of a pilot series, with plans to roll out monthly next academic year.
Thank you, Helen.
