George Leonard Sanders

6 March 1929 - 13 September 2024

George Leonard Sanders sadly passed away on 13 September 2024 at the grand age of 95. His wife shared this message with us.

Together with his twin brother, Tom, George attended Loughborough on a PE course (with add-ons) 1950 - 1952 before taking up a post at a village school. Whilst at Loughborough, George became a very accomplished half mile runner and represented Loughborough at many student games all over the UK, winning that particular competition at a games held in Glasgow. George's teaching career progressed through various schools in the Midlands and Scraptoft Training College where he taught and I am sure inspired many future teachers, concluding his career as Senior Lecturer in English and American Literature at De Montfort University in 1986. George's first wife had died and he was able to take an early retirement and in 1992 moved up into the forest above Betws-y-coed. George and I married in 1996 and I encouraged him to take up the reins of teaching again and for a few years he taught the International Baccalaureate at Llandrillo College of further Education in Rhos-on-Sea (Colwyn Bay). He continued to mark scripts for the IB for some further years eventually ceasing to do so in 2014 when he was the grand old age of 85.

Very obviously, the education he received at Loughborough stood him in very good stead for a most interesting career. He kept very fit and is a very good advert for the physical training he received at Loughborough. Celebrating your university's 75th birthday (I think I have that right) he was invited to attend a very belated graduation ceremony at the university and we spent a very happy day with you all. I have a splendid photograph of him in his cap and gown.
